The cast and orchestra of the INDEPENDENT OPERA at Sadler’s Wells’ 2007 production reassembled in 2008 to record, with Chandos, Elizabeth Maconchy’s one-act operas The Sofa and The Departure.

The Sofa, a comic opera with a libretto by Ursula Vaughan Williams, was freely adapted from the novel Le Sopha, conte moral by Crébillon Fils. The Departure, by contrast tragic and unsettling, features a libretto by poet Anne Ridler.
