Rhiain Taylor Mezzo Soprano

Recipient of Independent Opera Voice Scholarship 2017

Rhiain Taylor is a mezzo-soprano studying at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) under Louise Winter.  She is a recipient of an Independent Opera Voice Scholarship, and is generously supported by Help Musicians UK, The Waverley Fund and The Mario Lanza Foundation. Rhiain also holds an Annie Ridyard Scholarship. 

Rhiain began her training at Chetham’s School of Music.  She recently completed her undergraduate BMus (Hons) degree at the RNCM, receiving first class honours. In her final year of undergraduate study Rhiain was awarded the Chris Petty English Song Prize and in 2017 was a finalist in The Frederic Cox Award for Singing. She was also chosen as a member of the RNCM’s Songsters for 2017/18.  

Rhiain’s operatic appearances at the RNCM include Irene in Handel’s Theodora, chorus in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and chorus in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte. Roles in RNCM’s Opera Scenes include Maid in Massenet’s Manon Lescaut, Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Pierotto in Donizetti’s Linda di Chamounix and Emilia in Rossini’s Otello.

Rhiain performed as a member of the chorus in The Grange Festival in their 2017 production of Bizet’s Carmen, where she also covered the role of Mercédès.

As an oratorio soloist, performances include Handel’s Messiah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music. In 2016 Rhiain performed as second alto soloist in Macmillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross with Huddersfield Choral Society and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rhiain looks forward to performing the role of Dorothée in RNCM’s Autumn production of Massenet’s Cendrillon and Sandman in RNCM’s spring production of Hansel and Gretel.
