John Holland-Avery Baritone
Recipient of Independent Opera Voice Scholarship 2015
John Holland-Avery is studying at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), singing under Nicholas Powell and with his long-standing teacher, Rodney Gibson. Previously, John studied music at the University of York, taking part in many student operatic productions, including as Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, which toured to the Edinburgh Fringe and the Grimeborn Opera festival.
John was the winner of the Frederic Cox Song Prize which led to him singing live on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. John also took part in BBC Radio 3’s Young Artists Day Live, broadcast from the RNCM, singing in Humanity I Love You, composed by fellow RNCM student Carmel Smickersgill.
Previous concerts include the UK premiere of Luigi Gatti’s Requiem with Salford Choral Society and Manchester Camerata, conducted by Matthew Hamilton. As well as several concerts, tours and recordings with the choir of St John’s College, Cambridge, where John was appointed as the Bass Lay Clerk. Most recently, John performed Handel’s Messiah in Münster, Köln and Hannover in December 2015.
