In November 2008 INDEPENDENT OPERA at Sadler’s Wells commissioned and staged a new chamber orchestration of Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.
The intimate atmosphere of the Lilian Baylis Studio proved an ideal setting in which to evoke the mysterious kingdom of Allemonde and portray the subtle undercurrents and tensions that run deep within the human psyche.
The musical and creative team behind the success of the 2007 Maconchy double-bill returned for Pelléas et Mélisande, with the orchestra augmented by alumni of the European Union Youth Orchestra.
