Handel’s Orlando
INDEPENDENT OPERA at Sadler's Wells' 2006 production, Handel's Orlando, took place on the 7th, 9th and 11th of November at the Lilian Baylis Theatre, Sadler's Wells. The production was designed and directed by Alessandro Talevi and conducted by Gary Cooper.
Written in 1733, Orlando was the first of the three operas for which Handel drew on the Renaissance masterpiece Orlando Furioso by Lodovico Ariosto, a verse epic chronicling the chivalric adventures of medieval French knights. Though Orlando is rarely performed in comparison with Alcina and Ariodante, it is musically and dramatically the equal of both. Orlando is a fascinating 'magic' opera, brimming with some of Handel's most glorious music and inventive stage imagery.
