
Vena Ramphal Choreographer
Recipient of SADLER’S WELLS/INDEPENDENT OPERA Choreographer’s Fellowship
Vena is an independent choreographer, dancer and consultant in London.
With training in classical and contemporary South Asian dance, Vena creates choreography for a range of settings, from the proscenium stage to the catwalk and film. In 2006 she was choreographer for Independent Opera’s production of Orlando and in 2004 she provided direction and choreography for a dance film, Fold, commissioned by Channel 4. In 2007 she was commissioned by Greenwich and Docklands Festival to choreograph a new piece for Trafalgar Square as part of India Now, the capital’s season of events celebrating and highlighting cultural and economic links with India.
Vena studied on the Cultural Leadership Programme – a two-year Treasury-funded investment in excellence and leadership across the creative and cultural industries. She was mentored through this training opportunity by sampad, South Asian Arts.
Vena holds a PhD in Philosophy, Cultural Studies and Dance from SOAS London University. Her thesis, ‘A Word on Movement: Thinking Approaches to the Dancing Body’ examined the current practice of classical South Asian dance in Britain.
