Laurence Meikle Baritone

Recipient of INDEPENDENT OPERA Vocal Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music

Laurence Meikle was a principal artist with Opera Australia, Victorian Opera and many of Australia’s major opera companies and symphony orchestras before relocating to the UK in 2008.  Laurence has performed over 25 principal roles, some highlights which include Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Masetto in Don Giovanni, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Marcello and Schaunard in La Boheme, Belcore in L’elisir d’amore, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Littore in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Angelotti in Tosca.  In his debut with Opera Australia, he performed the role of Luiz in The Gondoliers at the Sydney Opera House.

Recent concert appearances include a Royal Command recital for HM Queen Elizabeth II, The Messenger in the London Handel Festival’s Belshazzar, and a concert tour to Hong Kong with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.  At the Royal Academy of Music, Laurence sang the roles of Hercules in Cavalli’s Il Giasone, Martino in Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro (Opera Rara Bel Canto Award) and the title role in Handel’s Saul for the Spitalfields Festival under conductor Laurence Cummings.  This year, Laurence has performed a three-month run as Marcello in the Soho Theatre’s Olivier Award-winning La Boheme, has sung Count Ceprano in Rigoletto with the South Bank Sinfonia, and made his Cadogan Hall concert debut, also with the SBS.  Future engagements include opera galas in Salzburg with Angelika Kirschlager, roles for Grange Park Opera, his debut in the title role of Don Giovanni for Woodhouse Opera, and opera galas and recitals throughout the year. Laurence studied at the Royal Academy of Music (Opera) and the Mozarteum, Salzburg.
