

Alessandro Talevi
Alessandro was INDEPENDENT OPERA at Sadler's Wells' Artistic Director 2005-2008 and Stage Director for the productions during those years. Born in Johannesburg, Talevi read Music and History of Art at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, before completing a postgraduate diploma in vocal accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music. In 2007 he was awarded third prize at the prestigious European Opera-Directing Prize in Wiesbaden for his concept of Rusalka.
Alessandro has directed and designed opera productions in the UK and South Africa,including Partenope for Opéra les Azuriales at Cap Ferrat and a double bill of La Colombe and L’occasione fa il ladro for the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 2008 and, prior to that, La voix humaine, Noye’s Fludde and La princesse jaune (London Oratory School), Un giorno di regno (Pretoria) and Gräfin Mariza (Johannesburg). In 2007 Talevi directed the revival of the Teatro la Fenice production of Ariadne auf Naxos in Bolzano and Lucca and opera tableaux for the Royal Academy of Music. He has worked as a staff director at English National Opera and English Touring Opera.
For INDEPENDENT OPERA he directed Rossini's La Scala di Seta (2005), Handel's Orlando (2006), a double bill of Maconchy's The Sofa and The Departure (2007) and Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande (2008) in a new orchestration by Stephen McNeff.
